Vincy Mas is back
Vincy Mas is back
Vincy Mas, the premiere cultural festival of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is returning with its explosion of colour, sound and movement, after a two-year break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
From June 24th – July 5th, 2022 Vincentians and visitors will get all revved up in spectacular fashion for the carnival, as they immerse in the pulsing ambience of steelpan, costumes, calypso and revelry. Usually, Vincy Mas takes place annually with events concerts, street parties, musical and costume competitions, and culminates with the Mardi Gras costume street parade.
This year, Vincy Mas events will be opened to both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. However, persons will be encouraged to get vaccinated, and to continue to practice all the health protocols.
The history of Carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines covers about six different periods, from the pre-1890’s to 2000 and beyond. Prior to 1977 the event was actually a pre-Lenten carnival. Carnival is derived from the Latin words ‘carne vale’, which means the removal of meat.
Whilst revelers gear up for Vincy Mas the following tips should be regarded:
- Book ahead of time to get the best deals with accommodation.
- Contact a Mas band so that you could be a masquerader.
- Improve your fitness before you partake in the parade because endurance is needed.
- Wear comfortable shoes during the parade.
- Wear sunscreen because the sun is incredibly strong.
- Hydrate and stay safe.
As the preparations culminate for the return of Vincy Mas, this fabulous festival which showcases Vincentian culture, tradition and heritage, aims to once more be “The Hottest Carnival In The Caribbean!”
